Summary: My first feminist analysis video, an in-depth analysis on what a romantic subplot in the Pokemon anime means for the USA audience grown up on Disney princess stories—but also what it means in the context of local (Japanese) literary tradition & pop-culture for the Shojo demographic. I was a Sophomore in college when I wrote this, so I wouldn’t have known what the word intersectionality meant at the time, but in retrospect, this basically is an analysis at the intersection of gender and nationality.

Summary: One of my more recent gaming news-adjacent op-eds, spotlighting the Legend Of Zelda Breath Of The Wild’s refreshingly hopeful take on a fictional, post-apocalypse society & it’s relevance to a particular aspect to it’s sequel’s trailers.

Summary: I made this video to highlight anime with a female lead I thought were underrated, underappreciated, or can set a new standard for quality or innovation in anime with female leads despite any of it’s other problems (the 5th title in particular is a problematic fave, but there’s a very important reason I included it if you stick with me till the end of the video. I probably should have made it it’s own video but oh well).

Summary: The very contentious topic of gender markers explained and expanded upon in a way that makes more comprehensive sense for people with a background in character design or media analysis. Additionally, Cana from Fairy Tail is better in this department than Wendy Koopa from the Mario series. I said what I said.

Summary: A a follow-up to the Why is Ash Going To School Video. Back in the day, a lot of Pokemon Anime fans were blaming Yokai Watch’s influence for causing Pokemon to go in a more ‘childish’ direction. As someone who has watched both shows, I thought it’s more likely for Yokai Watch’s influence to do something entirely different: break Pokemon from it’s westernized mold.

Summary: A fun video putting a new perspective on the age-old question of Ash Ketchum’s true age. I swear I did not know “shit” was so widely considered to be a swear word when I wrote this.

Summary: The first video I finished editing. This is my response to an old controversy over the Pokemon anime where people assumed Ash going to school meant the Sun & Moon series was going to be exclusively for two-year olds (keep in mind all we had to work off of at the time was a fan-translated magazine scan). To be fair, if Pokemon was an American cartoon their concerns might have had some ground, but Anime’s use of the school setting did not seem to be the same as it’s western counterparts.
